Scenes from Istanbul: Turkey’s protests

"Max Fisher from The Washington Post interviewed Emine Gozde Sevim, a Turkish freelance photographer who’s worked in Afghanistan and covered the Egyptian revolution. She didn’t know her next conflict coverage would be in her hometown when she returned to Istanbul in March. But when the protests began last week in Taksim Gezi Park, she took her camera and began documenting the demonstrations and police response. She’s kindly shared some of her photos, which are posted here."

First Death in Demonstrations

First Death in Demonstrations First Death in Demonstrations Turkish Medical Association declared that one person was killed during the demonstrations: “The warmongering political power who says ‘We have difficulty in keeping the fifty percent at home’ is to be held responsible for this death”. Turkish Medical Association has issued a report about the ongoing demonstrations. The report is as follows: “Unfortunately one person died during the events caused by the horrible attacks on the peaceful and ecologist demonstrations for Taksim Gezi Parkı. An automobile drew over the demonstrators in Ümraniye’s 1 Mayıs neighborhood, killing Mehmet Ayvalıtaş, a member of Socialist Solidarity Platform (SODAP).  Firstly, we would like to express our condolences to the family and relatives of our young fellow citizen.

 We declare openly that:

The responsible for this death is the political power which has been violently trying to stop the democratic demonstration ongoing for several days and rather than lending an ear to the just demands of the demonstrators, provoke them by calling them “a couple of looters”. Yet all the more, by claiming that they have difficulty in keeping their supporters at home, they perform the duty of a warmonger. What the government is to do is clear:
 - The police violence must stop; the police must retreat.
- All the authorities; the Minister of the Internal Affairs, the Director General of Public Security, the Governor of Istanbul and the Chief of Istanbul Public Security and all the governors and chief of public security of cities- Ankara, İzmir, Adana, Eskişehir, Balıkesir, Antalya, Kocaeli coming in the first place- in which violence was inflicted on the citizens must be removed from their duties.
 - All the detained citizens must be released.
- Gezi Park must be opened to the people; the Prime Minister must officially declare that the shopping mall project and the rebuilding of Taksim (Topçu) Military Barracks. We warn PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan: If this inhuman violence, torture and atrocity towards the citizens who use their democratic rights to demonstrate to protect Taksim Gezi Park is not halted, we are afraid that many people will yet lose their lives and the AKP government will be the responsible for them. NO POLITICAL POWER CAN PAY THE PRICE OF THESE DEATHS! As the Turkish Medical Association, we declare that until the our fellow citizens come to be able to use their democratic rights without being killed and inflicted to deadly injuries by the police, we will give medical service for the emergency situations and to bring this violence to an end, we will decide on how to participate in the country-wide protests together with other labour and professional associations.” Source: Radikal Daily, Hürriyet Daily News
